Chazy students begin instruction on a band instrument in the 5th grade. They may select the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone horn, or percussion. The study of a musical instrument could be a valuable step in your child’s education. Children who learn to play a musical instrument learn discipline, concentration, cooperation, and a new way to a richer, fuller life through the arts. There is a high correlation between success on a musical instrument and success in other areas of school.
Students receive a thirty minute small group lesson each week. Instruction begins during the first week of school. It is crucial that students attend all lessons and that they are prepared with the following: Instrument, Lesson Book, and a completed and signed practice record. The study of a musical instrument requires consistent practice and effort. Students are required to engage in home practice. Five thirty-minute sessions per week is a minimum. He/she must record this practice and have it initialed by a parent. The band room is also available for practice during the period 8 activity period. Students are instructed in proper practice technique, instrument care, and musical techniques. It is expected that students will complete the Essential Elements 2000 – Book One during the first year of instruction. Those who meet his standard will be accepted into the Elementary Band. My experience as a teacher has convinced me that any child willing to put in a reasonable amount of effort can be successful on a musical instrument.
