Dignity for All Students Act (DASA)
At Chazy Central Rural School, we are committed to providing all students with a safe and supportive learning environment where they are treated with dignity and respect. The Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) is a New York State law that protects students from harassment, bullying, and discrimination based on, but not limited to, race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender, or sex.
Who Can Submit a Report?
Any student, parent/guardian, staff member, or community member who witnesses or experiences an incident can submit a Mistreatment Form. Reports can be made using:
- A PDF form available in the offices, cafeteria, and a printable version is available below.
- An online form that can be submitted electronically.
What Should Be Reported?
Examples of reportable Dignity Act incidents include:
- Name-calling, slurs, or derogatory language targeting a protected characteristic
- Threats, intimidation, or physical aggression motivated by bias
- Cyberbullying connected to school
- Exclusion from activities or opportunities based on a protected characteristic
Conflict vs. Dignity Act Incident
It’s important to note that not every disagreement is a Dignity Act matter. For example, an argument between two students—where both are actively involved—is considered conflict, not harassment or bullying under DASA. Conflict is a normal part of human interaction and is addressed through other school supports and interventions.
Commitment to Non-Retaliation
Retaliation against anyone who files a report in good faith is strictly prohibited and will result in disciplinary action.
